Oh my goodness, how did I miss this! Patricia we must catch!! I adore you and Steve. I am so grateful to Steve for helping us launch MCCAP, the first HIV/AIDS Funding Coalition, at the Az Community Foundation and then housed us!! That kind of incubation was rare and a brave decision back then Thanks, Steve!!! . Patricia and I worked together, as well. \The Mittenthals were a hopeful sign for phoenix, certainly for me! And under the rubric of randomness often wins, Steve and I both had a connection to the same stunning edifice. an apartment building. in Grammercy Park, NYC. Number 36 Grammercy Park East. We brushed up on our Edwin Booth lore and he glowered. as only Steve could. that I was clearly born of royalty, being able to amble about without the riffraff. hilarious. quirky Steve. Patricia my heart is with you! Now where is your heart!? Scott Jacobson

I was very sad to hear of Steve's passing. I spent almost 10 years working with him as CFO at Arizona Community Foundation. Those were wonderful years watching the community foundation grow under his leadership, and how I enjoyed his famous wit, intelligence and kindness. When I applied for the ACF job, he noted on my resume that i had been an opera singer. I remember fondly in my final interview with him he asked me to explain how a trill was produced by the human voice. What an interview question! We bonded over our mutual love of opera, and our reverence for the English language. My sincere condolences to Patricia and Laurie. Steve made the world a better place.

Heartfelt condolences to Patricia and Laurie. As my first cousin Steve was a friend and mentor when I was young. Due mostly to geography we lost for touch for a long time but Steve looked us up about 10 years ago and we had several meaningful and enjoyable reunions. He was a kind, gentle man who made the world a better place. May his memory be a blessing to Laurie, Pat and the three granddaughters of whom he was so proud.
With Love, Renee Rogatz Meshel

Deep-felt condolences to the family of Stephen Mittenthal.
When I first arrived in Phoenix 24 years ago from the Bay Area, one of the first people I sought out was Stephen Mittenthal, then the President & CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation. My goal was to learn about the community, its leadership structure, and the scope of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations here. I will never forget our first meeting and the ones that followed, each defined by his welcoming warmth, accessibility, intellect and insights. He became a friend, a mentor, and a great source of support in subsequent initiatives to enhance the capacity of the nonprofit sector. I was sad when he retired and now saddened more by learning of his passing. I have no doubt that many of my colleagues and clients who were graced by his charm, good humor, and professionalism will likewise grieve over his passing. He emulated the best in philanthropic leadership. May his memory be a blessing.
