Elena Vasiliu, 94, of Boulder, CO, passed away on January 20, 2021.
She was born in Romania on May 26, 1926, daughter of the late Dumitru and Valeria Gales. She is survived by her daughter Irina Frangopol, her son-in-law Dan Frangopol, granddaughter Andrea Watson, grandson Radu Frangopol, and two great granddaughters Emma Watson and Elizabeth Watson.
As a child Elena was a very good student, enjoyed singing and was very outgoing. She loved everything surrounding her and spent many summers at her grandmother’s large family farm hanging out with cousins, aunts and uncles. Her father was a judge and her mother a very dedicated housewife and an excellent cook. Elena loved reading and exploring interesting subjects.
She graduated from high school in 1944, got a Bachelor of Arts in English and went on to become a high school English teacher and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. While as an English teacher in 1958, one of her students was a 12-year-old curly-haired boy. That boy later married Irina. Small world.
Elena met her first husband Ioan Motet when she was in college. They married in the summer of 1946. They had a daughter Irina in May 1947 and divorced in 1954. She met her second husband Vlad Vasiliu at the hospital where her mother Valeria had a surgery. They married in 1956. Vlad passed away in November 1971. She was a widow for the past 50 years.
Elena moved to the United States after retirement in 1992 and became a US Citizen in 1998. During her stay in the United States, she spent time with her family and friends. She loved to travel, telling stories, reading tons of books, and watching movies. Elena had a fantastic memory and was always ready to talk about literature and history. She always enjoyed getting together with family and friends. Her cheerful and good spirit has always influenced the whole family. We will miss her dearly.

We will forever be grateful for the immense privilege of having known and spent some precious time walking along the path of our delightful and dearest friend, Mrs. Elena Vasiliu. Of all people met across many a border, she was -indeed, the most truly amazing Lady we ever knew.
Throughout the many unforgettable moments shared together, Elena embodied an unwavering and contagious « joie de vivre ». Rain or shine, she graciously embraced life with pride and dignity, all the while always making sure we felt cherished. Never failing to match her legendary hats and impeccable outfits to the mood of the day, her unique, innate - yet unpretentious, sense of elegance simply reflected the depth of her shining soul. As she started to lose her independence, she faced drastic lifestyle changes with a courageous resignation, transforming a tiny bare room into the most welcoming haven of peace. And as she increasingly experienced excruciating pains, her faith and undaunted spirit gave her the strength to keep making the most of what life had to offer her. Never failing to express her gratitude in so many thoughtful ways, she remained an unforgettable inspiring model of graciousness and resilience until her very last hours.
Renowned for her impressive memory and brilliant mind, Elena never missed an opportunity to expand her prodigious knowledge. An avid reader, she was not only deeply curious about the world in general but also about people, especially those who surrounded her. A pedagogue at heart, she loved sharing passionately and at great length her immense knowledge of international literature, music and history... Her keen interest in current world affairs and politics were also often at the heart of our intense conversations. Despite her wise age, aside from her beautiful native language, she could articulate her thoughts whether in English or in French with great agility. I will forever remember how, as we strolled along Pearl Street Mall on a glorious Indian summer afternoon, while blissfully taking in the pale fall sunlight, she started reciting in the most impeccable French Lamartine’s entire romantic poem : “ Oh, temps, suspends ton vol...”. This is who she was ! She thought and communicated as she breathed. Neither her boundless knowledge nor her creeping pains could prevent her from being deeply connected with her surrounding world and - above all people surround her.
Finally, aside from these unique remarkable qualities, we will above all cherish the memory of her extremely attentive, thoughtful and generous heart which overflew with joy, love and compassion. Even when in deepest pain or sadness, she always reached out to find out how our entire family was keeping. She was the first one to share a tear with us or to praise our success. A genuine humanist and above all a faithful Christian, Elena deeply cared about the well-being of others; « nothing human [was] indifferent to [her] » (Terrence). Her gracious presence, contagious radiance and spontaneous kindness touched so many people’s lives beyond her beloved family. She adored children; she loved her family and friends unconditionally; and even in her short impatient moments, she indiscriminately treated people with respect and dignity, especially the nursing staff which finally took care of her...
What a unique gift to have been inspired over the years by such a truly loving, enlightening and overall exceptional Lady !

Thank you, dearest Elena, for your invaluable, everlasting presence in our lives.
As we modestly try to carry on your legacy,
Your intense joie de vivre and wisdom will be dearly missed.
May the warm memories of your loving heart
Bring comfort and strength to your beloved family
May you rest in eternal peace

With our deepest sympathy to the Frangopol & Watson families

She was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, an aunt, a cousin and dear friend. She knew how to keep all of us strong. I am not sure I can really express just how much I will miss her. Your hugs, kisses and smile bring me be to tears. The memories you made with us will last forever. Grandma taught me so much of what I know. It was grandma who taught me English. You were my sunshine, storyteller, inspiration, family historian and inspiration. You were also my problem solver and the person I relied to for wisdom and to lend me a helping hand.

Elena’s ability to make everyone feel comfortable and loved were her greatest gifts. I remember my days with her in Romania, her visits to Belgium and my time with her here in Colorado. She always wanted to know what was going on in my life.

Grandma, I will always miss you. Thank you for being the best grandma in the whole wide world. I am truly blessed to have known you. Thank you for all that you did for us all! Love you always, Andrea

With tears in my eyes I can’t say how much I loved my mother who gave me life, always kept me by her side, and was for 73 years my best friend. Suddenly dear Mammy you left me and I pray God to keep your soul in his hands and give you peace and comfort. Love you always, Irina

So much to say about such a sweet and classy lady, my Grandma! She always eager to find out more about your day and was always there for advise or to lend a helping hand. She was full of knowledge and wisdom and had an innate desire to share with you something interesting about history or an interesting book she had read. Her memory was second to none, possessing the ability to recount books/events as far back as her childhood. I will miss our conversations and her many trips to Florida where we enjoyed many visits to the beach, movies and restaurants. She loved Florida and the many winter months she spent here. Sending you much love Grandma and may the good Lord always watch over you in His mighty Kingdom! We will all miss you dearly!
