Arnold “Arnie” Ray Nordman was born in Aberdeen, WA on November 12, 1934 and moved to Forks, WA at the age of six. He graduated Forks High School in 1952, where he played football and was senior class president. Arnie then attended the University of Washington and graduated cum laude in 1956 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was also President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity from 1955 to 1956.
Arnie married Alma Gail Huntworth in 1957, and served in the US Army at Fort McClennan, AL March 1957 to June1957, followed by two years at Fort Bragg, NC from June 1957 to March 1959. Following his Army commitments, Arnie attended Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, from which he graduated in June 1961.
Arnie lived in Palo Alto, CA from June 1959 to 1964, where he worked for an early computer company. His children Lynn and Eric, were born in Palo Alto in 1962 and 1964, respectively.
From Palo Alto Arnie moved to Boise, ID to work for Boise Cascade Co in May 1965, and moved back to Seattle with BC from April 1966 to August 1967. BC moved him back to Boise August 1967 to August 1970, and then to Chicago to run Horder Stores, which BC had purchased. He lived in Wilmette, IL with his family from 1970 to 1994, where he held a variety of sales positions and spent 18 years active at Lake Shore UU in Winnetka, IL, until 1988. An all-around sportsman, his hobbies included downhill skiing, tennis, and running.
Arnie became interested in the Buddhist teachings in 1988. He quickly developed a passion for the Buddhist path and moved from Wilmette to Boulder, CO in 1997 where he continued to pursue his passion for Tibetan Buddhism under the guidance of his teacher Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Arnie hosted in his home in 1992 the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche while on a teaching tour in Chicago. He became a Vajrayana practitioner, meditation instructor and teacher of the Buddhadharma. He is known for his kindness, generosity, humor and sudden outbursts of song with which he loved to punctuate conversations.
He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and fellow sangha members.
He is survived by his two children, Lynn (husband Chuck) and Eric (wife Kaki); five grandchildren, Jillian, Justin, Nicole, Jonathan and Evan.
