Obituary
Carl Forest, born Carl Anthony Baumgardner on May 9, 1940 in Tiffin, Ohio to John Baumgardner and Luella (Dehn) Baumgardner, departed this world on December 14th, 2020. He is survived by his children, Cassidy Anne, Carly Elizabeth, and Austin James; his wife Viviane Forest, and ex-wife and friend Angie Forest. Carl was a self-made man who lived with purpose and passion.
A physicist, patent attorney, and writer, Carl moved to Boulder in 1992. Before that, he lived in Indiana, where he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives; Idaho, where he taught Physics at University of Idaho; Boston, where he earned his J.D from Boston University; and Michigan, where he earned his B.A. at the University of Detroit and Ph.D from Michigan State University. He married Angie Leachman in 1988. Their love for the Rockies and his family members in Boulder and Berthoud brought them to Colorado, where they started a family of their own. There they started a patent law firm. Duft, Graziano, and Forest grew over the course of 10 years to include 14 patent attorneys, then merged with D.C. law firm, Patton-Boggs. They were married for 18 years and had three children.
Carl found love again with Viviane Berenguer, a native Brazillian. Carl and Vivi were planning to move to Sanibel Island, where the family had vacationed for many years. In 2020, Carl, his sister Mary Sue Shay, and his brother, Dr. Jan Baumgardner, lost their youngest brother Martin. At the urging of his children, Carl had recently completed a memoir about their childhood and his unfolding life’s adventures.
Carl attended Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and later raced behind Jack Kennedy’s convertible to give the president a handshake. He interned with NASA in the 1960s, marched in protests against the Vietnam War, and was always eager to engage in heated political and scientific debates.
A brilliant thinker, Carl was continually exploring life through physics, philosophy and religion. A kind and devoted family man, he loved his job as a patent attorney, which kept him on the cutting edge of new technological inventions and processes. Well-traveled and an avid skier and ski-dancer, Carl was a creative and expressive writer of both fiction and non-fiction and loved all types of music. Well-read, philosophical and scholarly, he was an avid lover of the arts and nature who supported the Boulder Dinner Theater and the World Wildlife Foundation. A steady pillar for his family and law partners, Carl continually saw and brought out the best in others. He will be missed by all.
Services for Carl Forest will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Tuesday, December 22nd at 2 p.m. There will be a vigil at the church on Monday, December 22nd. Both events will be broadcast as well. We encourage people to make safe choices.
