Carmen Massop

February 7, 1938 — July 16, 2021

Carmen Hyacinth Massop (Allison), age 83, passed away on July 16th, 2021, after her hard-fought battle with melanoma cancer. Her final days were spent in her home surrounded by family and friends in Denver, Colorado.

Whether you met Carmen Massop for a few minutes or knew her for years, she made an indelible impression. Vibrant, classy, talented, and proper are some of the frequent words used to describe her. When Carmen walked in a room people noticed her. She commanded attention and people learned so much from listening to her, watching her and admiring her interactions.

Carmen was born on February 7, 1938 in Mocho, Jamaica to Alganez Jane Reid (Francis) fondly called by most “Aunt Jane” and Sidney “Papa Sid” Allison. Carmen grew up in Jamaica and attended graduate school at St. Johns Nursing School in New York where she and Harold were married. They returned to Jamaica for several years before returning to the United States. Carmen was known for her cooking, classy dressing, contributions in the community and charisma. She was a registered nurse for over 50 years. At age 70 Carmen turned her love of cooking into a full-time business when she started Carmen's Kitchen which produced English Toffee, delicious rum cakes and Authentic Jamaican Jerk Seasoning.

Carmen is survived by her brother, Calvin "Cal" Allison and her husband of 59 years, Harold Massop whom she had known since age 9. They were blessed with four daughters and sons-in laws: Paulette and Frank Birl; Debra and Kevin Ellis; Dawn and Patrick Love and Lori and Terrence Pace; Grandchildren: Tanya Torres (Wilson), Natayla Birl Wilson, Jaylan Birl, Kyle Massop, Jazmine and Jada Pace, Julia and Jameson Love, Derrick Ellis; Kevin Womack, and Haki Stampley and Great grandchildren Noemi and Dahlia Torres, Kenyon and Aliyah Wilson, Brandon, Brianna and Olivia Ellis and Cadence Womack.

Active and involved was an understatement when describing Carmen’s past times. There was not a PTA at any schools where her children attended that Carmen was not volunteering and ended up leading most. Her participation in the community spanned from helping at church most recently with funerals and those that were homebound to HOA organizations, political committees, and fundraisers. She loved to entertain and introduce her Jamaican culture to many through music, and foods.

Carmen had a passion for family, friends, golf, cooking, gardening and traveling throughout the Caribbean and Europe.

Carmen was a true matriarch who was dedicated to her family and their success. She was a faithful Christian, a loyal, gracious friend and neighbor with a loving and caring spirit. She had a unique ability to recognize and raise the best potential in people. As Maya Angelou said, “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” How true of Carmen Hyacinth Massop. Although her presence will be missed, her dynamic strong will and loving kind heart will live on in those she touched.

We will continue to honor the wife of 59 years to Harold Massop, Mrs. Carmen Massop was a special mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, confidant, nurse, volunteer, community leader, entrepreneur and more, to so many people.
