Charles William Zabel came to the end of this baptismal journey in the early hours of Wednesday, November 10, 2021. He was the second child of William and Lucille Zabel, born December 11, 1947 in Atchison, Kansas. He spent his early years in Atchison where he attended Trinity Lutheran Parochial school and Atchison High School. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1969. On December 27, 1969 during an ice storm, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Catherine, at Trinity Episcopal church in Atchison, Kansas.
They began their married life together in North Kansas City, Missouri before Charley was inducted into the US Navy. They moved from Great Lakes, Illinois to Vallejo, California where Charley was assigned to the USS Thomas Edison nuclear submarine. He finished his military service in Oahu, Hawaii in 1976 before settling in Littleton, Colorado. In 1979, they moved to Boulder, Colorado where Charley worked in sales for Swagelok Denver Valve and Fitting.
Charley was devoted to his family and in retirement he enjoyed weekly golf games with his buddies. As a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 40 years, he served on the foundation board and church council. Charley was always there for his friends and neighbors with his warm smile and gentle nature. Family, friends, and grandchildren describe him as handsome, humble, respectable, compassionate, loving, kind, joyous, and everyone’s favorite.
Charley will be missed by all, but his legacy of selflessness for those he loved most will live on. He is survived by his wife Mary, his sister Carolyn Fuhrman, his two sons and their wives, Jeff and Sarah, Pete and Emily, and four grandchildren, William, Ryan, Jack, and Elle.
A Christian service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 1PM at Grace Lutheran Church, 1001 13th St Boulder, Colorado. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Foundation or Lutheran Family Services, memo: Charles W. Zabel.
