Cynthia Bowie

May 12, 1958 — March 21, 2013

Cynthia Gail Bowie of Boulder passed away in her sleep on Thursday, March 21, 2013. Cynthia was born on May 12, 2013 in Owensboro, KY to Winton Stuart Bowie and Genevieve Rose Bowie (Spear).
A few months later, her family moved to Colorado. When Cynthia was 18 months old, her mother was killed in a riding accident, and her father died five years later. So Cynthia was raised by her older siblings, growing up in Colorado, New York and California. She graduated from Aspen High School in 1975 and then attended Lamar Community College and the University of Colorado at Denver. She transferred to the Theatre Department of the University of Denver in 1977 where she met Doug Caskey.
Cynthia and Doug were together through graduation in 1980. They were married in Denver on May 1, 1983 and shortly thereafter moved to Pasadena, CA where Cynthia worked as the bookkeeper at the Pasadena Montessori School while Doug attended acting school. They returned to Denver in 1985.
In 1987, Cynthia began the graduate theatre program at the University of Colorado at Boulder to pursue playwriting. She had one play produced there, directed by Dennis Elkins, a well-known face in the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and now with the Theatre and Dance Department at Fort Lewis State University.
Upon graduating, Cynthia received an internship with the nationally recognized Changing Scene Theatre on Champa in Denver. Unfortunately, she was never able to take advantage of that opportunity, as she was overtaken by Chronic Fatigue/Immune Dysfunction Syndrome and Fibromyalgia and was unable to work. Her wildly unpredictable energy levels and the chronic muscle pain stifled her creatively and artistically.
She spent several years battling the medical establishment to have her condition recognized and correctly treated by doctors. She was subsequently able to successfully navigate the Social Security Administration bureaucracy and receive disability status decades before the federal government officially recognized CFIDS. She then assisted several other CFIDS suffers in applying for disability.
When she realized that her medical condition would probably never allow her to pursue her dream of playwriting and production, she shifted her priorities to having children. Genevieve Rose Bowie Caskey was born in Boulder on June 19, 1998 and became the greatest treasure in Cynthia’s life. Cynthia sometimes regretted not being able to write, though she never regretted devoting her limited energies to Genevieve. She remained a light-hearted inspiration and encouraging beacon to many around her, as well as being a loving, devoted spouse and mother.
Cynthia is survived by her husband, Doug Caskey, daughter, Genevieve Rose Caskey, and siblings: Lynn Osterkamp, Russell Bowie (both of Boulder) and Barbara Marlin (Denver). She was preceded in death by Betty Ann Castleberry, the sister that raised her.
