Delores June (League) Campbell “DEE”
Delores was the 13th child born to Anna and Ray League of Stratton, Nebraska. Her mother Anna passed away when Dee was only 4 days old. Her loving Aunt Ellen and Uncle Ernie League took her in, and raised her as their own child, where she gained another sister!
Dee attended school in and around Stratton, Nebraska, graduating high school in 1953. While attending High School, Dee worked part time in the Stratton Hospital, where she was paid $1.00 per day. After graduation Dee worked as a long-distance telephone operator in McCook, Nebraska. She met her future husband (Richard Campbell) in 1951. They were engaged in 1952 and married on July 18, 1954.
Dee left her job in McCook and moved to Denver, Colorado with her husband in July 1954 where she worked at Wright McGill Fishing Rod Factory until her husband’s USAF discharge in 1956. They then moved to Boulder, Colorado where she worked as a PBX Operator for Beech Aircraft while her husband attended the University of Colorado. Dee was subsequently laid off due a company policy that women could not work after their 5th month of pregnancy. Dee gave birth to a son, Brett Allen Campbell, in June 1958. After Brett was born, she worked as a waitress at Fred’s Café in Boulder until her husband’s college graduation. He earned a BSEE Degree in June 1959, and she earned a PHT Degree from the University of Colorado. PHT is Putting Hubby Thru. That was a real thing in 1959.
Dee and her family then moved to Phoenix, Arizona in June of 1959. There they had a daughter, Lori Ellen Campbell (Miller) in June 1960. They were not in Arizona long and moved back to Boulder in August of 1962 where her husband worked for Ball Aerospace. Dee had another son, Scott Richard Campbell, in April 1967. They moved to Longmont, Colorado after Richard retired in January 1997.
Dee spent a lot of her time reading, crocheting, playing the piano, singing, playing pinnacle, hosting work parties for her husband, as well as running their trampoline business for many years. She devoted her life to God and to her children, who appreciated the sacrifice. Dee attended Calvary Bible Evangelical Free Church until they moved to Longmont after retirement. She loved watching and listening to the birds from her front porch and could tell you what kind of bird was close by the sounds she heard when she started losing her sight. The Chickadee seemed to be her favorite! She raised beautiful lilies on her patio, and enjoyed all flowers that grew outside.
Dee had an amazing sense of humor, took a joke well, and dished them out even better. Being the 13th child, she surely had her share of practical jokes played on her! When her first great grandchild was born, she informed us she did not want to be called great grandma, just call her GIGI. That name stuck, and she has been known as GIGI ever since to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also known as Aunty Dee to a multitude of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews. She adopted every child her kids brought thru the house, and they all called her mom. If you were a friend of hers, you were there for life.
Dee was preceded in death by both of her sons, Brett (1997) and Scott (2018), her parents, Anna and Ray League, her Aunt Ellen and Uncle Ernie, and 10 brothers, and 1 sister. She had one living brother, Ken League of Texas at the time of her passing (who has since passed) and her sister Phil League Brown and her family of Monte Vista, Colorado. She has left behind her loving husband of 67 years, Richard Campbell of Longmont, Colorado, her daughter, Lori Ellen Campbell-Miller, of Longmont, Colorado, her grandchildren, Blake, Samantha, Ashley, and Donny, and her great grandkids Lucas, Sophie, Allison, Lilith, Jackson, Brooklyn, and Bailey. She did not believe in treating one any better than the other, no matter where they came from, and taught her kids to love them all. A lesson well learned. Being raised by her aunt and uncle, whom she always called Mom, she knew the love and devotion it took to raise a child and spent her lifetime raising and teaching her children to be loving, respectful adults. She was an amazing Wife and Mother, Grandmother, and GiGi! Delores was the heart of her family.
Dee peacefully passed away on October 2nd in Longmont, Colorado holding the hands of her husband and her daughter, while he sang “You are my Sunshine” to her. Her grandchildren Blake, Ashley and Samantha were outside her window via video chat talking to her and singing to her. She died of pneumonia due to complications from Covid.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her, and Heaven is rejoicing at her entrance!
Services will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Bible Evangelical Free Church in Boulder, Colorado followed by graveside services at Mountain View Memorial Garden in Boulder. A reception will follow, to be announced.
