Dennistoun “Denny” Brown passed away on October 26, 2013, while hiking the Hogback Ridge trail near his home in Boulder, Colo. He was born in Palo Alto, Calif. on April 9, 1957. Denny is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ann Oglesby, and four children: Connor, Alaina and Parker of Boulder and Tyler of Palo Alto. He is also survived by his mother, Anadel Law, of Palo Alto, his stepmother, Vera Lüth, of Menlo Park, Calif., his three brothers David Brown (Margaret), Jerry Brown (Sunja), Andy Brown of California and his sister, Adriana Cassani, of Utah.
Denny graduated from Stanford University in 1979 with a degree in biology and earned his M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1983. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and was Administrative Chief Resident there from 1987 to 1988. He was granted a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Riley Children’s Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind., from 1988 to 1989 before taking up surgical practice in Billings, Mont. He served in several administrative roles, including chairman of the surgical section and the pension and benefits committee. Denny was widely respected for his clinical knowledge, technical skills and compassion for his patients. After leaving medical practice in 2006, he moved to Boulder, Colo. and became a research analyst for Nelson Roberts Investment Advisors.
Denny’s passion for working with his hands led him to take up guitar building as a hobby. In addition to handcrafting beautiful musical instruments, he wrote several books about the art and sold them to guitar builders all over the world. Denny was a talented photographer and chronicled the high school sports experiences of his children and their classmates as well as many wonderful family vacations from Canada to Costa Rica.
A celebration of Denny’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, at 10 a.m. at the Unity Church, 2855 Folsom St., Boulder, Colo. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Stanford School of Medicine for bipolar disorder research (details below). The family would also deeply appreciate your best memories of Denny, which can be posted on this site under the Condolences and Tributes tab.
