Donald (Don) Wayne Slater, retired research scientist and resident of Broomfield, CO, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2015 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Don was born in Eugene, Oregon; he grew up in the small town of Creswell, OR, and attended its public schools. Growing up he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, participating in wrestling in high school and getting into mischief. His antics cleared out the high school one day when a small vial containing mercury that he was carrying in his shirt pocket exploded, sending black smoke throughout the building.
Don graduated from the University of Oregon, Eugene, with a B.S. in Physics and received his Ph.D in Geophysics from the University of Washington, Seattle. While at the UW he met and courted Sue, his beloved wife and partner of 40 years.
After college he worked as a research scientist at Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA. He conducted scientific research of the magnetic fields surrounding the earth’s atmosphere and contributed to the understanding of the field’s composition and impact to people and the environment. He retired from Battelle in 2001. While he enjoyed pursuing his science, he wanted to spend more time tinkering, woodworking, traveling, and walking to Starbucks daily for his morning cup of Americano.
Don lived a full and meaningful life. He achieved the good life his way. He loved his wife and life partner, Sue, dearly. His quiet strength, courage and patience during his struggle with brain cancer inspired all who knew him. He will be remembered for his wry humor, kindness and devotion to family and friends. He will live in our hearts forever.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Sue Chin Slater; Richard Slater (nephew) and wife Bonnie; David Slater (nephew) and wife Yvonne; Rebecca Norder (niece) and husband Junior; Rose Slater (sister-in-law); great niece Lara Slater; and great nephews Jakob and Mark Slater, and Justin, Evan and Mason Norder. He was preceded in death by parents Ed and Betty Slater and brother Larry Slater.
For those who wish to honor his memory, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Don’s name to Halcyon Hospice, Doctors Without Borders, or the charity of your choice.
