Edith Wu Li passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 5th, her loving daughters by her side.
Born on January 17, 1933, in Hankow, China, she grew up during the war as a mayor's daughter fleeing the Japanese to Chungking, then to Shanghai. In 1949, she and her sister flew alone to attend Northwestern University under the watchful eye of Colonel McCormick of the Chicago Tribune. She was a Chicago debutante and a "stockbroker" at Merrill Lynch before marrying the love of her life, Tingye, on June 9, 1956. In 1957, Tingye and Edith moved to NJ where Tingye worked for Bell Laboratories. While in NJ, Edith was the consummate mother, crafts-group participant, and wife to an increasingly successful electrical engineer. She travelled extensively throughout the world with Tingye before settling in Colorado where she interspersed her circling the world with walks circling the Foothills Community Park. Wherever she was though, she was always "present" for her grandchildren: Jay, Scott, Michael, and Jessi— playing endless games of Uno, sharing in “serious” TV watching, and providing a truly “bottomless” pantry full of food for her hungry grandchildren.
Edith’s ever cheerful smile, quiet dignity and strength, and unconditional love and acceptance will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Cohen and Kathryn Dessau, and her grandchildren: Jay and Scott Cohen and Michael and Jessi Dessau. A private family service will be held at a later date to scatter both Edith’s and Tingye's ashes so that they may rest forever together in their beloved mountains.
