Edward Jack Safdie, 1938 - 2025
Edward Jack Safdie born July 18, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York passed away on January 28, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado, in the company of his beloved wife of 59 years, Carlene Light Safdie, daughter Samantha S. Miller, grandson Parker Edward Henderson Miller and son-in-law, Matthew J. Miller.
Edward grew up in San Francisco and attended Washington High School and the University of San Francisco. In 1967 he moved with his wife Carlene to New York City where he worked as a stockbroker at D.H. Blair. Always interested in historical commercial property, he and Carlene moved back to San Francisco where he began buying older buildings which he would successfully bring back to their historical origins. Later, this would include the 1920's Sonoma Mission Inn in Sonoma, California where he added a spa which drew people worldwide. As well as the Norwich Inn and Spa in Connecticut where he became a great supporter of the local community. Ed became not only a pioneer of this health industry, but the foremost authority on Spas. He authored two popular spa cookbooks, Spa Food (date) and New Spa Food (date).
Due to Ed's reputation for the success of the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, he was approached by the Principality of Monaco to open a spa in the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. The California Terrace became a destination for many Europeans looking for the ultimate spa experience that didn't exist in European spas until then.
He will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
