Ervin J. Bell, 90, of Boulder passed away on December 1st, 2015. Erv is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen; daughters, Katie MacPhail (Mike) and Emily Uy (Gerald), and grandsons Andrew and Matthew MacPhail, and Miles Uy. He is also survived by his brother Leonard and nieces Kim, Lesley, and Lili. Erv was born on October 9th, 1925 in Denver. He graduated from Denver’s East High School in 1943. He served in the Army in WWII. He returned home and earned degrees from the University of Colorado in Architectural Engineering & Business. He founded The Architectural Index in 1950 (an annual index to architectural magazines), and published it for more than 50 years. Later he received a Master’s of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. He was an architect focusing on residential solar housing. He served on the faculty at CU and the Planning Board of Boulder. He loved Tai Chi, pottery, skiing, design, dance, Zen Buddhism, and was a lifelong learner. He previously lived in both Chicago & the Bay Area. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CU Foundation in support of architectural education.
