Evelyn Tallman

December 20, 1926 — December 6, 2018

On December 6th, 2018, a bright star from our greatest generation went out with the passing of Evelyn Ann Phillips Tallman. Mrs.Tallman passed away of natural causes at the age of 91 in Boulder, Colorado.

Evelyn was born on December 20th, 1926 in Carbondale, PA, the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Phillips and Lawrence Gould Phillips and sister to Eleanor and Nelson. She grew up in Honesdale Pa. In 1944, Evelyn graduated at the top of her class from Honesdale High School where she was editor of the school newspaper and an active member of the theater and musical group.

In the fall of 1944, Evelyn entered St Joseph’s Nursing School in Elmira NY, graduating in 1947 at the top of her class and receiving her certificate as a Registered Nurse(RN). She worked as a nurse in NYC until her marriage to 2LT Richard Joseph Tallman, West Point Class of 1949. Her 23 year adventure as a military wife and mother began as they moved to LT Tallman’s first duty assignment at Ft Benning, GA. Evelyn, Dick and their seven children, Steve, Joe, Marty, Mary, Susy, Rick and Margaret moved many times setting up homes across the US and in Germany. During Dick’s wartime deployments to Korea and Vietnam, Ev kept the home fires burning. On July 9, 1972, Brigadier General Richard Tallman was killed in action in Vietnam.

With strength and resiliency, Mrs Tallman, a New Gold Star Widow, went on to receive a BS in Hospital Administration from Penn State University and worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1976, Ev moved to Boulder, Co, where she lived until the end of her life. During her 42 years in Boulder, Evelyn continued to raise children and pursue a robust business career. She established her own fitness center, worked for Mountain Bell, achieving recognition as the top salesperson in the western division, and became a licensed insurance broker. Eventually, she returned to her nursing roots, working at Boulder Manor and Frazier Meadows as a supervising nurse. Evelyn served as an advisor to members of Congress and senior military officials regarding survivor benefits, having an impact on legislative changes that benefited Gold Star Widows and families that followed.

True to her generation, Evelyn maintained a strong sense of self-reliance, resilience and patriotism. She took great pride in the fact that several of her children and grandchildren have served and continue to serve in our nation’s armed forces . Her example of fortitude, her quick wit and love of a great story have been shining examples for all her children.

Known as “Mutti” to her 25 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, and “Aunt Ev” to many nieces and nephews, her life will continue to be an inspiration to them all.
