Garnet Hayes passed away March 16, 2015, in Boulder, Colorado. Her daughter, Cathy, her son-in-law, Bill and her granddaughter, Alyson were at her side during her short illness.
She was born Garnet Leola Stapleton in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, on Sept 13, 1912 – a Friday. Her family moved to Wisconsin when she was very young and settled in Ladysmith. Garnet wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. She attended Duluth State Teacher’s College in Duluth, Minnesota. It was there she met her husband, Edwin W. Hayes. They married and moved to Independence, Kansas in 1941 and Edwin became an independent oil producer for the war effort during World War II. Edwin and Garnet moved to Colorado Springs in 1950 with their daughter, Cathy. Edwin Hayes was a well known businessman in Colorado Springs in the 1950’s and 1960’s. One of Ed’s favorite projects was Skyway Park. Garnet was charged with naming the streets after planets, stars and constellations. One of her favorite names was the community swimming pool - the Little Dipper.
Garnet was a member of PEO chapter DL, the Assistance League, several bridge clubs and many other organizations. She and her husband were members of the Garden of the Gods Club, the Kissing Camels Golf Club and the 100 Club at the Air Force Academy.
Garnet grew up in a musical family. Her Grandpa Charles Miller was a band master in Minnesota who played trumpet with John Phillip Sousa on occasion. Her brother Charles and her Uncle Ed Miller played the trumpet. Her mother, Ollie, played the organ for the kids after school and everyone played an instrument and sang. Garnet studied violin for many years and loved to play.
After discovering watercolor painting, a medium well suited for her, Garnet studied and painted with many well-known water color artists including Clayton Staples of Colorado Springs. She painted while traveling the world. Since taking up painting in the 1960’s, Mrs. Hayes has been a prolific painter. She was a member of the Arati Gallery in Old Colorado City and had a dedicated following there. She won a Juror’s Choice award at the Annual Christmas in July show in Colorado Springs in 1993 for her painting, Summer Snow.
Mrs. Hayes moved to Boulder in 2002 to be closer to her daughter.
Garnet is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Hayes Daly and William Daly, her granddaughter, Alyson Daly, her youngest brother, Richard Stapleton and his wife Marian of Littlefork, Minnesota, her step son, Robert A. Hayes and granddaughter Gwen (Hayes) Miller of Mobile, Alabama and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Garnet was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Weaver Hayes, in 1970, as well as her parents, Arthur and Marian Olive (Miller) Stapleton, her brothers, Charles Stapleton and Cecil Stapleton, her sisters, Virginia Birmingham and Carol Johnson, her daughter-in-law Shirley Hayes, and her step son, Edwin Miller Hayes.
Garnet was full of determination and drive. She loved all animals and plants, to entertain, to garden, to play the violin and most of all, to paint her watercolors. She leaves a hole in our hearts and will be sorely missed.
Garnet will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (www.birds.cornell.edu), or the Wild Horse Sanctuary (www.wildmustangs.com), Hot Springs, South Dakota
