George Warren Miller passed away on March 18, 2016 , at age 92. Born in Evanston, Illinois, George was the son of Wallace L. Miller and Georgie Keeler Miller. He was preceded in death by his half-brother Wallace B. Miller and his sister Jean Miller Edwards, by his first wife Elizabeth Wallace Miller to whom he was married for 54 years beginning in 1946 and by his second wife Bertha Merrigan Miller to whom he was married for 10 years beginning in 2000. George is survived by his sons Bruce (Terri) of Bloomfield Hills, MI, David (Kathleen) of Wayzata, MN and Mark (Brenda) of Barrington, IL and his daughter Melinda Miller Remley (Steve) of Fort Worth, TX, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
George grew up in Wilmette, IL and graduated from New Trier High School. He enrolled in Dartmouth College in the fall of 1941, but interrupted his college education to enlist on his 18th birthday in the US Navy, where he served from 1942-1946. George served in the Pacific theatre of WWII and saw action in the Philippines and Okinawa. Following the war, George reentered Dartmouth College and graduated in 1947.
George began a successful career in commercial banking with the First National Bank of Chicago in 1947, rising to Executive Vice President. From 1964 to 1970, George was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of the Commonwealth in Detroit Michigan. After briefly serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of CA-based First Charter Financial Corp, then the second largest savings and loan company in the US, and owning and managing a small business in Detroit, George launched a new career in real estate development in Columbus, Ohio. George worked first with Nationwide Real Estate Investors, a publicly held real estate investment trust, beginning in 1973, and then with Nationwide Development Company in 1980, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, where he was involved in development of a number of significant Columbus office projects.
George was an accomplished trumpet player and led jazz and swing bands in high school, college and in the Navy. George also enjoyed golf, wood carving, travel and canoeing and fishing in the wilderness border country comprised of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico.
Interment will be private. A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held in the future on a date to be determined.
