James Stanley

August 23, 1932 — August 15, 2021

Our precious and loving James William Stanley ‘Jimmy Billy’ transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, August 15th, 2021. He was surrounded by family and loved ones and passed peacefully after enduring dementia since 2019.

Jim was born on August 23, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Helen Lies, passed away when Jim was in the seventh grade, leaving Jim and his older brother, Jack, to be raised by their father, John R. Stanley. Jim graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1954 from the University of Illinois in Champaign.

After graduating from college, Jim served in the Army’s Scientific and Professional division in Huntsville, Alabama, where he met the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Betty Dyson. Jim then began working at IBM in Lexington, Kentucky, and later moved the family to Boulder, Colorado, where he retired 31 years later.

Jim was active in civic life in the Boulder area where he volunteered on the board of Boulder County’s Community Action Programs (CAP), working to alleviate poverty and promote equitable practices.

Jim and Betty have four beautiful daughters, Helen Mayfield, Catherine Ruivivar, Mary Peck and Eva Stanley and two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ryan Peck. Jim also had countless friends and extended family who came to adore his gentle and loving soul.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held October 17th, 2021 at the Rembrandt Yard, 1301 Spruce St, Boulder, CO from 2–5 pm.

Any donations in Jim’s honor may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Boulder, CO on 1419 Pine St, Boulder, CO 80302.

Thank you Papa, for bringing such generous joy to our lives. You will be missed.
