Jean Leissler Potter, 86, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on August 3, 2020 due to congestive heart failure. She was born December 17, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, to Mildred and Charlies Leissler. She married her love, Theodore “Ted” C. Potter, in 1952, who preceded her in death in 2003. They raised their family together in Nutley, New Jersey until moving to Oceanport, New Jersey in 1990.
Jean was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and cherished her role as Grandma to her 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She had a vivacious personality and made friends everywhere she went. She and Ted enjoyed golf and were members of Upper Montclair Country Club in New Jersey for a time. She attended every sports game her children were involved with; cheering them on, encouraging them to succeed. Jean was particularly fond of the beach. Before moving to Oceanport, most summers were spent at the Jersey shore in Manasquan, and Jean’s ashes will eventually be returned to her beloved Atlantic Ocean. An avid swimmer, she enjoyed their backyard pool, which was the center of summer fun for children, friends, family and neighbors.
Jean is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and David Decalo from Boulder. Her sons, Theodore C. Potter Jr, Charles T. Potter, and Thomas Potter preceded her in death. She is adored Grandma to Chloe Decalo and boyfriend Gregory Ashbaugh, Emma Loson and husband Kevin, Jacques Decalo, Theodore C. Potter III and wife Emily, Gregory Melograno, Branden Potter and Ryan Potter; as well as loving great-Grandma to Vincent Melograno, Theodore C. Potter IV, and Orren Loson. Jean is the dear sister of Linda Dicks of London, beloved aunt to Rebecca and Scott Boylen, and Sally and James Pleasance, great-aunt to Isabelle and Nicolas Pleasance, and Scarlett and Amelya Boylen.
For the past 11 years, until their health conditions made it impossible for them to stay together earlier this year, Jean lived an active lifestyle with the “love of her life” Winfield Giguere of Lincroft, NJ. They lived part time in Oceanport, and part-time in Bradenton, Florida. They were best friends who enjoyed playing golf, social activities with friends in their condo-communities, going to plays, Yankees games, afternoons at the Moose Lodge on the beach, hosting lobster bake parties and getting to know the bartenders at the various bars they frequented in New Jersey and Florida. They were often told what a “cute couple” they made. Jean was a member of the garden club and the yoga fitness group at their home in the Timber Creek Golf Club community in Bradenton.
All who knew Jean have fond and loving memories of her fun personality and warm heart. She will be dearly missed and is forever in our hearts.
