Joan Michener died in Boulder, Colorado on October 6 following many years of a gallant battle with Huntington’s Disease.
She was born in 1954 in Long Beach, California, the third child of David P. Michener and Jean Martin Michener. Her childhood was spent in Kentucky, Maryland and Colorado. She attended the University of Colorado, the University of Costa Rica and Santa Clara University and graduated with an M.D. from Creighton Medical School. She was trained in her specialty of Family Practice and her primary medical practice was with immigrant farm workers in southern Colorado. She lived after her retirement for several years in Nicaragua among people she admired.
She is survived by her father, her siblings, Marian Michener, Douglas Michener, and Kirsten Michener, stepmothers Delores Michener and Dorothy Berndt and her beloved second family, the Merlin Browns of Grand Junction, Colorado.
Throughout her life Joan made her own decisions Her life was defined by her concern for the underprivileged.
