John Paul Mantey, Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church member, died peacefully at home in the company of family on Sunday, January 20, 2019.
Born August 10, 1936, in Fort Morgan, CO, to Alma Jean (Quackenbush) and Paul John Mantey, he was the oldest of six. Raised in Oakley and Sharon Springs, Kansas, he was big brother and Sergeant-at-Arms to Pat, Jim, Phil, Peg, and Ann. John graduated from Wallace County High School, earned his BS and MS at the University of Notre Dame and his PhD at Stanford University in Electrical Engineering.
A twenty-seven year career with IBM began in Yorktown Heights, NY. He was awarded IBM’s Outstanding Contribution in 1967 for developing the algorithms for pattern size grading for the automated cutting and sewing of clothing. From 1967-69 he worked in oil exploration and with NASA in Houston, Texas. He arrived in Boulder in 1969 where his focus shifted to magnetic tape drives and software design. From 1991-2000 he worked for Storage Tek.
A very talented designer and inventor with a portfolio of varied patents, John enjoyed problem solving. In addition to his career he was active in Boy Scouts with Troop 78 for more than 20 years and was a member of the Union Pacific Railroad Historical Society.
He leaves behind a loving wife of twenty-one years, Erma (Janecek, Lynch), children, Lisa (Chris) Hill, Paul (Susan), and Eileen (Mike) Kilfoil, their mother, Elizabeth (Aitchison) and seven grandchildren, Lauren, Savannah, Carolyn, Sonja, Ryan, Jack, and Katherine. John will be remembered as a humble and kind brother, husband, father, and grandfather. With all his career achievements, John’s primary focus was always his family.
Funeral Mass is Thursday, January 24th at 11:00am at Sacred Heart of Mary in Boulder. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Friends of Man, to Parkinsons research, or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held in late March.
