John Robert McGinn passed peacefully on April 2, 2015. He was born September 4, 1924, in Augusta, Colorado to John A. McGinn and Helen C. Cossum. He was reared in Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from Pueblo Catholic High School.
During World War II, he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. His last ship supplied ammunition to the destroyers which shelled the Okinawa shores. He was commissioned in the US Navy and served as personnel officer for the United States Organized Naval Surface Division in Pueblo. Later he graduated from the University of Colorado where he met and married Elinor Myers on August 26, 1950.
During his long municipal career which began in Pueblo, he managed cities in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado and retired from Canon City, moving to Lafayette Colorado in 1986. He served on the Colorado Municipal League Board, as chairman of the New Mexico City Management Association, and was a lifetime member of the International Association of City Managers. He received numerous awards and honors for his municipal service.
He was a longtime member and Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He served on the Avista Hospital Board of Ethics, on the Sister Carmen Board of Directors, and was an active member of the Sacred Heart of Mary Church where he devoted many years of caregiving as a Stephen Minister.
From his youth he was an avid fan of the CU Buffalo Football team. He and his wife Elinor enjoyed wonderful years of travel, skiing, bridge, tennis, mountain climbing. Always positive and smiling, he was tirelessly devoted to his family and community.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, his children: John P. McGinn (Leslie), Judith Patno (Brian), Janet Driscoll (Paul), James B. McGinn (Jamie), twelve grandchildren: John, Jason, Jourdan (McGinn); Eric, Noelle, Sean, Sarah (Patno); Nathan, Matthew, Peter, Lisa, Timothy (Driscoll); and two great grandchildren: Luke and Silvana (Patno).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Boulder or the Sister Carmen Center in Lafayette.
Recitation of the Rosary will be Monday, April 6 at 6:00 PM at Sacred Heart of Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 7 at 2:30 PM at Sacred Heart of Mary with a reception immediately following. Interment of the cremated remains will be on Wednesday, April 8 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery.
