Joseph Stanley Zawislan was born Sept. 28, 1971, in Rome, New York, and left us
too soon on July 28, 2021, in Boulder Colorado.
He spent his early years in Verona, New York where his family had a St. Bernard
named Santa. He became Santa’s constant companion, riding her and playing
with her. This would be the beginning of a lifelong passion for animals and St.
Bernard’s.
After moving to Boulder, Joe spent years perfecting his video game skills. In his
youth he also was an avid collector of comic books, baseball cards, and anything
“Star Wars.” Joe graduated from Fairview High School in 1989. He then went on
to graduate from Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York, and to
achieve an MBA from SUNY Oswego in 1995.
He was not destined for office life and pursued something with the open sky. Joe
found his match with the United States Postal Service in Boulder and worked
there for more than 20 years until his untimely passing. He enjoyed meeting the
people and their furry friends on his postal route. He loved sharing pictures and
stories. The postal service became his extended family and a source of support
and pride.
When Joe was not working, he was caring for his dogs or someone else’s. He also
enjoyed spending time with his friends, rough-housing with his niece and nephew,
and enjoying the outdoors. He spent many years caring for his parents as they
aged and will be remembered as a loving son, brother, and friend.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Sue and Frank Zawislan. He is survived
by his brother, Bill Thompson, and his wife, Tess, and their children, Blake, and
Carly. Joe is also survived by his sister, Tanya El Mahi and her husband. He is also
survived by other extended family and friends.
