Laurence Johnson

Laurence George Johnson passed away on September 27, 2022 at age 80 due to complications from cancer. He was born in Denver, CO on September 19, 1942 to Laurence and Frances Johnson. He spent his childhood in Arvada and Wheatridge, CO. He graduated from Arvada High School and then Colorado State University where he majored in business. Larry met Celia Latimer at CSU in 1963 in a business letter writing class. They were married in 1965, were married for 56 years and 53 of those years were in Boulder. They lived briefly in Wichita, Kansas after they were married while Larry worked for the Coleman Company. They moved to Boulder when Larry was hired by IBM and he worked there for over 40 years. Larry had a strong faith and was active in his church, Grace Commons (formerly First Presbyterian), where he and Celia attended the entire time they lived in Boulder.

Through the years, Larry spent a lot of time golfing and boating with many friends. He loved travelling with his family back to Celia’s original home on St. Simons Island, and vacation homes in Winter Park, CO, Grand Lake, CO and Tucson, AZ. Larry was a member of Boulder Rotary Club. For many years, he served as the Chair of the club’s Crayons to Calculators, which helped Impact for Education by filling backpacks for students. Larry was honored by Impact for Education a few years ago as their Volunteer of the Year. Larry will be missed by so many loving friends and family who enjoyed being around someone with such integrity, a genuine interest in others and an easygoing love of life.

Larry is preceded in death by his wife Celia, his parents, Laurence and Frances Johnson and his sister Patricia. He is survived by his sister Susan (Randy) Norman, his daughter Linae (Tom) Holcombe, his son Lance (Allison) Johnson, and his grandchildren, Sophie and Tyler (Linae and Tom’s children) and Marigold (Lance and Allison’s daughter).

A memorial service will be held at Grace Commons in the chapel on October 24th at 11:15am. Donations can be made in Larry’s name to Grace Commons Church or Meals on Wheels or Impact on Education or a charity of your choice.
