Loren Darvin Rasplica
(August 29, 1917 – March 1, 2017)
Beloved to his children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, Loren Darvin Rasplica passed away peacefully on March 1, 2017, in Boulder, Colorado, at the age of 99. Born August 29, 1917, in Glen Carbon, Illinois, to William Bernard Wenceslas Rasplica and Frances Emily Mashek Rasplica, Loren married his Milliken College sweetheart, Dorothy Ford Rasplica, in Chicago, Illinois, December 27, 1941. Enlisted in 1942 he served in the US Army until September 1945, including as combat infantryman in Europe in the “Cactus Division” 103rd Infantry and was awarded two bronze stars. He served in the military government in Zirl, Austria, at the end of the war, then was transferred to the 45th Division until the war in Japan ended. After earning an MA in Music from the University of Oklahoma he embarked on a long career as a band and orchestra teacher and woodwind performer in Petersburg, Illinois, Chicago, the Chicago suburbs and Chicago Heights School District No. 170. A master woodworker, he produced wonderful furniture and carvings and was a sought-after teacher. He was a lifelong fisherman and outdoorsman and an early proponent of organic gardening. Loren was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 71 years. He is survived by his children Laurel Rasplica Rodd, Donna Rasplica, and William Rasplica, son-in-law Greg Rodd, daughter-in-law JoDee Keller, grandchildren Joshua Rodd (Athena Pantazis) , Jessica Rothman (Jon Rothman), Kara Rasplica, Caitlin Rasplica Khoury (Megdy Khoury), and by a great-granddaughter, Jane Rodd. Loren’s ashes will be interred at a graveside service to be scheduled later this spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lacey, Washington.
Contributions in his honor may be made to the Sierra Club or World Wildlife Fund, both of which he enthusiastically supported.
