On Sunday November 24, 2013 Marie K. Turner, loving wife and mother, passed away in her home at the Sunrise at Flatirons Assisted Living Community. She passed away in the company of her children, and spent her last hours listening to her favorite music in the company of her loved ones.
Marie was born on November 10, 1926 in Holyoke Massachusetts to John Aloyisius Kean and Anastasia Smith Keane. She attended Holyoke High School, and then went on to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Radio and Drama from New York University. While in college, she wrote and produced radio programming. After completion of her Baccalaureate degree and having earned many graduate credits, she went on to work in radio and advertising and then radio production at station WOR, full time. In September 1950, Marie married William E. Turner; originally of Bronx, New York. William (known to all as Bill), was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy, who was again called to Naval service in 1951 for the Korean conflict. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1953, the couple settled in Whitestone, New York to raise their growing family. In 1959 they moved to Huntington, New York. Marie returned to school at the CW Post campus of Long Island University and earned a Masters degree in Education. She went on to serve as a librarian at the Huntington Public Library, retiring in 1987. At that time, Marie and Bill relocated to New Bern NC, where they enjoyed many years together as active participants in their community and visiting with family and friends; both there and “at the beach” with extended family in Fenwick Island, Delaware. After the death of her husband in 2004, Marie moved to Houston Texas to be closer to her youngest grandchildren, and in 2011, Marie again relocated to Sunrise at Flatirons in Broomfield CO in 2011.
Marie was pre-deceased by her son William in 1982. She is survived by her daughter Ann, her husband John Taylor of Ellenville NY, grandsons Tiernan and Silas, great-grandson Liam; son James J, his wife Sue Turner of Monroe NC, grandchildren Lauren, Erin and James; daughter Mary E Turner of Northport NY, grandson William Dolan; and son John V, his wife Jeannine of Broomfield CO, grandchildren John, Elise, Catherine, Natalie, Mary, Bridget, Therese, and Elaine.
Marie received the Last Rites of the Catholic Church, and moved on to be reunited with her beloved family in Heaven.
The sadness of her loss will be felt by family and the many whose lives she has touched. Her loved ones are comforted by so many happy memories of Marie; her love, her faith, her generous spirit, and the strength of her character.
