Mark Irving Haies (May 30, 1936 - June 9, 2024)
Mark Irving Haies, age 88, of New York, NY, passed away on June 9, 2024 in Boulder, CO.
Mark was born in New York - the state where he lived for more than 80 years - on May 30, 1936. He attended Woodmere High School and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he proudly played on the varsity lacrosse team.
He worked for six decades, well into his 80s, as a technical sales engineer. Among the highlights of his career were standing on the 108th floor of the World Trade Center when it was under construction (and had no walls!) and starting up a company that he successfully led for two decades.
Although Mark didn't strike people as a trendsetter, he ran both the New York City and Boston marathons (sometimes in less than three hours) before running was cool, played lacrosse before most had ever heard of the sport, and ate health food at a time when people washed down red meat with martinis.
A lifelong New Yorker, he moved to Colorado, where three of his four grandchildren lived, in order to spend more time with them.
He is survived by his wife (Mikki); his three children: Marci Orensky (Evan), Jonathan (Mirella), and Matthew (Jennifer); his four grandchildren: Melissa Grossman (Glen), Ariel Porto, Lucy, and Annabelle; and his three great-grandchildren: Oliver, Theo, and Phoenix Grossman.
A celebration of Mark's life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 2:00 PM Mountain Time and 4:00PM Eastern Time, at the Boulder Jewish Community Center, 6007 Oreg Ave., Boulder, CO, 80303.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Research Foundation, The Toby Project, Harlem Lacrosse, or New York Road Runners.
