Mary Ann Elizabeth Hibl
August 8, 1930 – January 20, 2024

Mary Ann Hibl passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at her home in Boulder, Colorado following a short illness.

Mary Ann was born in Dickinson, North Dakota to Jerry and Albina (Mehulky) Kostelecky. She graduated from Dickinson High School and then studied at Dickinson State College where she met her husband, Joe. Mary Ann wed Joseph J. “Joe” Hibl on September 25, 1950.

Mary Ann and Joe moved to Bozeman, Montana, where Joe attended Montana State University. Following Joe’s graduation in May 1953, they moved to Canton, Ohio. In 1957 they landed in Boulder, Colorado where together they raised six children. Mary Ann took pride in maintaining a lively and loving household. She prepared delicious homemade meals and is remembered fondly for her traditional Czech foods and hand-decorated sugar cookies. She shared her love and talents with her family and friends. One of her favorite activities was dancing polkas and waltzes with her husband.

Mary Ann was active in several organizations at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder including Chancel Choir, Altar and Rosary Society, Quilters and Junipero Serra Club. Among her many artistic endeavors, she professionally retouched and “colorized” black & white photographs. She refinished antique furniture and sewed clothes for many relatives. Her dozens of hand-made quilts are family heirlooms. The Saint Bonaventure Indian Mission and School in Thoreau, New Mexico credits Mary Ann and the Sacred Heart Quilters with sewing and delivering hundreds of quilts to the Navajo people. The Indian Mission and School call her “Mary Ann Hibl the Quilt Lady”.

Mary Ann is survived by her brother, Jerry Kostelecky, of Yakima, Washington; her sister Dorothy Hoornaert of Pleasant Hill, California; six children David (Kay), Diana Bailey (Mike), Andrew (Lydia), Anthony “Tony”, Mark (Michele), and Matthew (Terry); twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
