Obituary for Metta Edith Sager to be put in the Daily Camera
Former Sugar Loaf resident Metta Edith Sager, 92, died peacefully in her Longmont
home Saturday, February 3rd, 2018. She spent her last day in the midst of those she
loved most. Pastor Ritchie Furay will officiate at her “Celebration of Life” service to be
held at Greenwood & Myers Mortuary (2969 Baseline Rd) at 11 am, Thursday, February
8th. A reception will be held at Greenwood & Myers following interment.
Metta’s pioneer family came to Colorado in 1896 and homesteaded the Weaver Ranch
on Sugar Loaf Mountain. She was born at home in Boulder, Colorado on October 25,
1925 to William Donald Fraser and Gertrude Irene Weaver Fraser. She and her
husband, Russell Dale Sager, got acquainted as pen pals before he came from
Michigan to meet her. He got a cowboy hat, a guitar and a gal before enlisting in the
Navy for WWII. She wrote him a letter almost everyday while he was in the Pacific.
When his ship was in for repairs she took the train to San Pedro, California where they
were married May 19, 1944. After Russell returned from the war they made their home
in Colorado.
During her life Metta enjoyed many handicrafts: painting landscapes, still life, decorative
folk art painting, scrapbooking and stamping cards. She crocheted many beautiful
items and made many of her daughters’ clothes, including prom dresses. She was
always busy with some project. In 1966 she returned to Sugar Loaf to live on a piece of
land across the gulch from the original homestead property in a house built by her
husband. She was an active member of the Sugar Loaf Volunteer Fire Department for
many years, a Personal Care Provider for Boulder County Hospice, and a member of
Rocky Mountain Chapter of Tole and Decorative Painting Society.
Metta was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers, Donald and Ray Fraser, her
sister Frances Mackey and her son-in-law, Gary Funk. She is survived by her sister
Shirley Coleman, her daughters, Trudy (Bill) Lyford, Linda Funk and a son Ben
McCune. Her survivors include three grandchildren and their spouses, Cheryl (Ray)
Townsend, Mark (Christine) VanLeuven, and Tammy (Frank) Stratton and six
great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Tru Community Care Hospice ( 2594
Trailridge Drive East-Lafayette, CO 80026) or Sugar Loaf Fire Protection District (1360
Sugar Loaf Road, Fire Station #2- Boulder, CO 80302).
