Michael Carter

Michael John Carter of Boulder, Colorado passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 unexpectedly at his home. He was 54 years old.
Mike was born in Denver to Dr. Douglas B. Carter and Sheila Wherritt Carter. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with an emphasis on computer science.
He dated fellow Buff Jan Lutz Carter, and they were married on January 10, 1987 in Longmont. Over the past 30 years, the two have shared a love of baseball, skiing, and Formula One Racing, and enjoyed spending time with family and adventuring in the mountains.
Mike’s IT work for the University of Colorado Boulder while still a student became a passionate and life-long career. He was equally passionate about the people he worked with and mentored. He semi-retired in 2015 and continued to work with the department.
After his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2001, Mike became a founding member of the Red Rider recognition program in the Tour de Cure bicycle event for the ADA. He has taken the program nationwide over the last 10 years, honoring more than 6,000 Red Riders and instituting the signature spectator chant “Go Red Rider!” Mike raised nearly $100,000 personally and motivated the Red Riders to raise millions nationally.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; mother Sheila; sister Gina (Hugh) and brothers Douglas (Susan), Frank, and Chris (Teresa); Jan’s sisters Jeannette Peterson(Chris), Joanne Vande Walle(Chris), and Laurie Lutz(Wally Meyer); nieces and nephews Josh Carter (Rachel, Skye and Azure), Tai Nass (Josh and Hue), Nolan Bingham (Cylus); Tori Tucker (Nick and Lily), Cameron Carter, Spencer Carter, Ana Chang (Evan and Esteban), David Ramirez, Megan Epps (Jason, Caelyn and Ian), Alana Lisano (Steven and Tyler), as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Mike’s life will take place at 11:30am on Wednesday, November 1 at Scott Carpenter Park, where Mike proposed to Jan in 1985. (1505 30th Street in Boulder.) Lunch to follow.
Mike wanted everyone with diabetes to know that they were not alone by raising money to send kids with diabetes to Camp Colorado each summer. Memorial donations to fund Camp Colorado scholarships in Mike’s name can be made through the following:

We invite the community and Mike's diabetes family to join us on Saturday, November 4th at 3:00pm, at the Boulder County Fairgrounds to celebrate Mike's life. There will be a short program and then together we will ride one mile in honor and memorial of Mike just as he led everyone out at the Tour de Cure for the last 10 years.
