Monica Marie Rowland, 77, of Boulder, CO passed away on July 23 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, CO. Monica was the daughter of Richard A. Muma and Mary E. Buser., also of Boulder. Born on November 24, 1938 in Traverse City, Michigan, Monica grew up in Wichita, KS when her family relocated there during WWII. The family later relocated to Boulder, CO where Richard worked at the Beechcraft plant North of Boulder.
Monica was a graduate of Mount Carmel Academy and Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS. She served as a recreational supervisor for the American Red Cross at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio.
Monica married Frank W. Rowland on June 23, 1962. The couple had 3 children, Peter, David, and Rebecca.
An avid teacher, Monica taught 2nd grade at St. John’s Catholic School in Encinitas, CA and later taught 1st grade for many years at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Boulder. While teaching, she made life long connections with many families in the Boulder area and continued to tutor their children until her illness precluded her from continuing. She tutored many students from grade school through high school and even through college in some cases. Monica was very proud of her student’s accomplishments, both academically and outside of school. She enjoyed attending many of the important life events of her students and even their children. Being included in graduations, birthdays, concerts and performances was a source of joy in her life.
Monica is survived by her children and two brothers, Michael C. Muma of Auburn, WA and Richard T. Muma of Cloverdale, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Patrick Neal Muma.
A Rosary will be said in her honor at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, 3300 Table Mesa Dr., Boulder at 7 PM on Thursday, July 28. A funeral Mass will be said at 11AM at St. Martin De Porres on Friday, July 29.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation.
