Muriel E. Woods 83 went home to be with her Lord on January 5, 2022. She was born in Duluth, MN, the daughter H.J. (Jack) and Evangeline Woods. From age four she lived in Grand Rapids, MN, graduating from Grand Rapids High School. She received her B.A. in English from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.
Professionally she taught high school English in Minnesota for five years. Then, since she had long been interested in libraries, she entered the University of Denver, earning her M.A. in Librarianship in 1966. She was a librarian in the Boulder Valley Schools briefly before accepting a position with the Community College of Denver System on the West (later Red Rocks) Campus. She felt she held every librarian’s dream job, as she had the opportunity to build the collection from a couple of hundred books to a full, accredited collection; hire the staff; manage the budget and play a major role in planning the library facilities (Learning Materials Center-LMC) on the permanent campus. Her last position was in the library on the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver, where she was the Assistant Director for Media and Telecommunications. When that unit separated from the library, she became the Director of the Auraria Media Center. The library and the media center served the University of Colorado at Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. During her time there, the media center added distance education and satellite teleconferencing to existing services. In summing up her career she said, “Going from card catalogs to satellite transmission/reception was quite a ride.” Muriel retired on July 1, 1997.
In 1970 she received the First Decade Award for Women from Gustavus Adolphus College. She was also listed in Outstanding Young Women of America for that year.
During her life, Muriel and a good friend had wonderful times traveling together for about 25 years. She also enjoyed reading, Bible study, art, classical music and, later, her cat Libby. She belonged to First Presbyterian Church (Grace Commons) for many years and sang in the Chancel Choir part of that time. She belonged to professional organizations while she worked, but after retirement she kept only a membership in Zonta International.
She was preceded in death by her parents and dear friend Irving Garson. She is survived by Susan Garson (Tom Pakele) and Jonathan Garson (Page) who “adopted” her after Irving’s death. She is also survived by “adopted” granddaughter, Ashley Huinker, a number of cousins and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at Frasier Meadows Retirement Community at a later date.
