Our much loved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on the morning of November 26, 2016 from complications of COPD and achalasia. Despite her failing body, she maintained a positive outlook, a sharp mind and a wonderful sense of humor.
Born in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, to Urban and Caroline Meyer, Pat lost her mother to Polio at age two and her father to Tuberculosis when she was 14. She and her sisters Helen and Martha were raised by various relatives. After graduating from St. Marys Catholic high School, Pat moved to Alaska where she worked as a medical secretary at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka. She later moved to Missoula, Montana, where she met her future husband, Wolfgang, in 1959. They married July 2, 1960 in Vienna, Austria. The couple spent the next two years in Boulder and New York City, before moving back to Vienna, where her two sons were born. They finally settled in Boulder in 1964. Her daughter was born in Cambridge, England, during a year’s stay there. With her family, she spent years in Princeton and again in Vienna, and later enjoyed trips all over Europe, China, Japan, India and the US.
Pat was a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and wife. She put her family first, caring for them always, spoiling them frequently and always loving them unconditionally. She sang to her children, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…” She enjoyed letting her children and grandchildren take over the house with toys, cooking and crafts projects. She was happy when her family was happy. She was fiercely protective and excellent at managing times of crisis whether a middle-of-the-night earache, a school issue or a flooded basement. She could laugh about almost any situation. She understood people and how to care for them. She made people happy, whether visiting scholars from all over the world or her beloved neighbors on Ithaca Drive. She volunteered for the homeless and causes for underprivileged populations. She was universally loved.
Pat is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wolfgang Schmidt, her children and their spouses Michael and Amy, Johannes and Mimi, Elizabeth and Steve, and also by grandchildren Alex, Andrea, Ginger and Kevin. She is further survived by her sister-in-law Dietlind and nephews and nieces. The family plans a private celebration of Pat’s life. She will be loved forever and greatly missed.
