Phil Anthony Simpson, Son of William Francis Simpson and Anita Orland Simpson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado on December 7, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brother, William Simpson and his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Marie Sullivan Simpson. He is survived by his sister, Anne Locke (Robert); sons Philip Simpson, Jr (Mary); and Daniel Simpson (Janeen); and daughter Elizabeth Simpson Dietz (Timothy); grandchildren Anthony (Jennifer), Louis, John and Sage Simpson; Nicholas, Annalisa and Isaac Dietz; and Chloe Simpson.
Phil was born on August 23, 1926 in Washington DC. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and proudly served his country aboard the USS Herbert J. Thomas in Japan at the end of World War II. He graduated from Catholic University with a degree in Physics. After college, he gained employment in Washington D.C. for the Nation Bureau of Standards (NBS). There he met his loving wife. Barbara. In 1954, Phil’s division was transferred to Boulder, Colorado, where he completed the remainder of his 41+ year career with NBS/ National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Phil was a man of strong Faith, Integrity and conviction. He was active member of the Faith community of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and School, integral in the establishment of the Sacred Heart of Jesus School Foundation.
Phil will be remembered for his wonderful (“pun”-ishing) sense of humor and positive outlook. He enjoyed his passions of genealogy, astronomy, music, love of the outdoors and softball throughout his life and into retirement. He worked hard to share these passions for the betterment of his community. His love of softball led him and like-minded friends in the 1950’s to lobby for the development of Boulder’s softball fields, now enjoyed by many as the Mapleton Softball Complex. He played softball into his 80’s, shared the stories of his life and ancestors, and serenaded his loved ones with his harmonic to his last days.
