Philip S. Solomon died in Boulder on April 20, 2019 of complications from major surgery several months earlier. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends.
Phil Solomon was an internationally recognized filmmaker and a Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in the Department of Cinema Studies and Moving Image Arts, his lifelong academic home. He taught there for 26 years, having retired in 2017. He was a revered teacher, mentor, and friend to thousands of students during his career.
Solomon was born on January 3, 1954, in Manhattan and was raised in Monsey, NY. He studied cinema at Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton, and earned an M.F.A. in film from the Massachusetts College of Art.
Later Solomon became an associate of the seminal American experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage, both as a collaborator on three films and as a faculty colleague at the University of Colorado.
Over his long career, Solomon’s work was screened in every major venue for experimental film throughout the U.S. and Europe, including three one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art and two Whitney Biennials. His films won first prize awards at major international film festivals for experimental film and he received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. His films reside in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and The Chicago Art Institute, and The Academy Film Archive has also preserved several of his films in its collection.
Phil is survived by his sister Shelly Solomon Klein, of Suffern, NY; niece Jamie Barresi, nephew Matthew Klein; great-nephews Nicholas and Jake Barresi; many cousins; and a myriad of friends, his beloved extended family.
