PHYLLIS JEAN MARCOTTE
Like a firecracker, Phyllis Jean Shannon was born on the 4th of July in 1929 and never really slowed down until she passed away on Sept. 15th 2015. She was born in Dayton, Ohio to Carl & Martha Shannon and had two younger sisters: Nita (Leland) and Joyce (Warner). Phyllis graduated in 1947 from Fairview High School in Dayton and received a B.A. from Otterbein College in 1951. She became a dedicated school teacher and taught school in Dayton and Long Beach, CA. She then moved to Boulder and worked at the University of Colorado. In 1957 she married Thomas L. Wilson, and together they had three children: Tommy, Linda, and Steve and ran the Lazy-T Turkey Ranch in south Boulder until Tom went into real estate. They were members of First Methodist Church and later charter members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Tom passed away in 1969, and Phyllis returned to teaching. She taught elementary school in Boulder where she was a popular local teacher for 14 years. In 1976 she married her eye doctor - Dale Marcotte M.D. Together they traveled around the world for many years, everywhere from Antarctica to China, Tahiti to Alaska, often volunteering for charitable medical work in third world countries. Phyllis was kind-hearted, loved socializing with friends and family and had a sparkling personality that could light up a room. She recently celebrated the weddings of her granddaughters: Chelsea Geolfos to Riley Abel and Candace Geolfos to Scott Bassett. Her husband Dale passed away in May after a long illness. In August, Phyllis celebrated the birth of her great grandson Ace Daniel Abel. Her daughter Linda and husband Colby Geolfos took great care of her in recent years. She will be missed by them and their families, her sons Tom and Steve, her two sisters and their families and many other relatives, teachers, students and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Boulder this Saturday at 11am. Donations may be made in her memory to the church at 4215 Grinnell Ave, Boulder, CO 80305 or Otterbein College.
