Rhett Speer was a Renaissance Man…in every way. He was exceptional.
Rhett was many things over his short 74 years on this earth.
He was an aficionado in many areas:
Classical Music. His favorites were Bach. Beethoven. Mozart and more..
Opera. We attended Operas around the world. London. Salzburg. Berlin. Dresden. New York. Puccini. Verdi Operas and Requiems were among his most favorite.
Art: The Dutch Classics including Rembrandt, Vermeer and too many to list. He loved Salvador Dali…he knew every fine painter in history.
Navaho Tapestries. He loved them and the wonderful tribes that created them.
Fine Woodworking. Detail with a love of and ability to recreate furniture in the style of Hepplewhite, Chippendale, in his woodworking shop.
Travel. We travelled extensively throughout all of Europe and the UK annually to visit family and visit vast and wonderful museums large and small everywhere. Always attending high Mass at Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's and the Dome Church in Salzburg, Austria …just a few.
Rhett was born in College Station in 1946. He attended the University of Oklahoma. Rhett held multiple Master’s Degrees.
Rhett was a member of the National Thespian Society. He was an actor and singer.
Rhett was an Eagle Scout.
Rhett was an Environmental Engineer, a registered Microbiologist and Pathologist.
Rhett was in the US Army. He served in Vietnam in combat duty that is considered classified. He held the 20 year record for sharpshooting a Browning Automatic Rifle.
Rhett served on the National Sciences Council in Washington, DC for President’s Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
Rhett served on the Colorado Economic Development Council in the 1980s under the Governor. He co-designed the roadmap for economic & technology development in the State.
Rhett served on the Board of Boulder Tomorrow.
Rhett was self employed. For 25 years, Rhett worked on.behalf of the Department of Energy as an Independent Contract, holding a Top Security/Q Clearance and his focus was on Weapons/Nuclear Facilities. This included helping shut down Rocky Flats in Boulder. He worked for years at Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory in New Mexico testing weapons, preventing terrorism, Oakridge Tennessee and Argonne, Chicago. He was asked to go to Chernobyl and Fukishima after the reactor explosions.
Rhett protected America.
Rhett had multiple myeloma cancer, severe heart issues & macula degeneration. He was an expert in monoclonal antibodies, cell structure and directed his own care for 10 years.
Rhett was with Carole Speer, his wife since 1986. He was the most loving, caring, incredible human being that ever existed. It is a hole in the heart that can never heal.
Rhett re-created our home in Boulder Heights. It was paradise and he loved nothing more than to sit outside in the morning with a coffee and watch the dozens of hummingbirds and finches. He spoke to them all...
Rhett had a wonderful family that he was very close to in Texas…his sister Sherry, brother-in-law Kenny Coomes, a sister Marsha and a brother, Gary and his nephew Grant.
Rhett was simply larger than life.
Rhett was the smartest person in the room…always.
