Roberta M. Smith, 91 years young, died from COVID-19 on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at The Retreat at Church Ranch, an assisted living facility. Roberta was a true native of Boulder, CO being born on April 20, 1930 to Vernon and Mae Carlson in Boulder Community Hospital. Only four years of her life were lived outside of Boulder, those being in Wyoming and Montana with her then-husband Bill Carr. Being a graduate of Boulder High School, Roberta participated in the planning and organizing of many of her graduating class’ reunions when not working for the family business (City Storage and Transfer: North American Van Lines), and ultimately working her way up to president of the company. Although she loved the challenge of the moving company, her passion was her family. After moving with her two young daughters back to Boulder, Roberta met and married Lawrence ‘Larry’ Smith, who also worked for North American Van Lines, in 1970 and soon afterward added the third of three daughters. Larry passed away suddenly in 1974, and Roberta, once again, found herself as a single mother. Her fortitude to persevere through hard times was her saving grace. She was a fiercely independent woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be missed.
Roberta is survived by her three daughters and their families: Laura (Carr) Blocher and husband Michael, April (Carr) Sawyer and husband Brett, and Kirsten (Smith) Cadwell and husband Joe. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Matthew Michael, Andrew Michael, Tristan Sawyer, Lily Cadwell, Isabelle Michael and Connor Michael. She was preceded in death by her husband (Lawrence Smith), her parents (Vernon and Mae Carlson), her brother and his wife (Vernon and Faye Carlson), her sister and her husband (Betty and Marion Johnson), and her nephew (Kim Johnson).
A memorial service is planned for spring, 2022.
