Roger Charles Townsend, 87, passed on January 8, 2021. Roger was born March 9,1933 in Kiskiminetas, Pennsylvania. Son of Virtue and Emma Townsend, he grew up on his family’s farm, attended a one-room school-house, graduated from Washington & Jefferson College, became 1st Lieutenant in the US Army and later achieved his MBA in Business. He spent his 41 year career with Jones & Laughlin Steel as a salesman and sales manager.
Roger volunteered for Hosanna Industries for 14 years, repairing homes in the community. He assisted seniors with tax preparation for 12 years, served as elder in 3 churches and proudly donated over 150 pints of blood.
After meeting Anne Shelley Barnes on a blind date, Roger promptly forgot her last name. With detective work, he found, wooed, and married Anne on September 8, 1956; they were happily married for 56 years. Both enjoyed world travel; their adventures included destinations such as Europe, Thailand, Russia, China and many other excursions. They loved the sun and sand of both the Caribbean and Outer Banks. They were patrons of the theater and symphony, as well as avid readers. Roger enjoyed playing golf and tennis, even into his later years. He was a 36 year resident of the Pittsburgh area until moving to Colorado in 2017 to be closer to family.
As his daughter, I couldn’t be more proud; my dad is an accomplished man. But, it is my wish that my father be remembered, not just for his accomplishments, but for the man he was in life. My father was a man of great integrity, service, friendship, and love for his family. He had a razor sharp mind, keen wit and a dry martini in hand. This is the man that raised me; this is the man that will be forever respected, remembered and missed by colleagues, friends and family.
Roger is predeceased by parents, Virtue and Emma Townsend, brother Howard Townsend, sister Lois Tietsworth, wife Anne Townsend and son Mark Townsend. He is survived by daughter Michelle Townsend Stout, son-in-law Skip Stout, and grandsons Rob and Indy Stout.
There will be a small, family service at a future time to be determined.
