Ross passed away at TRU Community Care in Louisville after battling liver cancer that was diagnosed in January 2016. He was born in Hartford, CT to Timothy Cooney and Diana Marcus. After moving to Denver, CO, he graduated from East High School in 1955. He was the last person in the U.S. to be drafted into the Navy. He served with the SeaBees in the South Pacific. After working a short time at an engineering firm in Denver, he finally began to fulfill his dream to study architecture at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He received a B.A. in Architecture in 1968. Prior to that he earned a Certificate of Completion in City and Regional Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his time at the university, he worked at the Boulder Planning Department in the mid 1960’s where he was part of a team instrumental in developing Boulder’s Greenbelt. In 1971, he opened Cooney/Wadman Associates which merged with Carl Worthington Partnership. Later, he started Cooney/Morrie Associates. All the firms were located in Boulder. During his career, he designed commercial complexes, public buildings, specialty buildings and residential projects. Additionally, he served as President of the Colorado North Chapter of the AIA and was a member of Boulder Rotary.
He loved golfing, classical and jazz music, art, and mentoring young architecture students. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jurgensen, his only child, Diana Lincke (Sven) and two grand-daughters, Eva and Anja Lincke.
