Samuel Baum

Samuel Baum, father, grandfather and soul mate to Hilda Baum transitioned his spirit on
December 2nd, 2018. He had friends throughout the world and will be sorely missed by
everyone who knew him.

Sam was born to Morris and Frieda Baum on November 3, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA. Sam
shared his early life with his two older brothers, Joe and Nathan in Brooklyn, New York. He was
always a stellar student and was admitted to Stuyvesant High School in New York, one of the
most prestigious high schools in the United States.

Following his high school years, he attended Brooklyn College graduating with a degree in
Sociology. He continued his graduate education at the University of North Carolina. It is here
that he met his wife of over 59 years, Hilda. They were married on September 7, 1952 in
Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sam had a distinguished career that included multiple positions teaching at universities across
the world. As one of the leading experts in international population, he published countless
papers as well as spoke at conferences throughout the world. After teaching during the early
portion of his career, he accepted a position with the International Population division at the
Census Bureau just outside of Washington DC where he rose to become the Bureau Chief of the
International Demographic Data Center.

Sam was a tennis enthusiast and played throughout his life. He also enjoyed board games and
excelled in Scrabble and Rummikub. He and Hilda enjoyed the opera as well as any form of art.
They travelled the world together embracing different cultures and sharing his highly sought
knowledge of population demographics . His love of travelling and diversity passed on to his
children and grandchildren who also frequent travelling to other countries.

Sam loved spending time with his family and following his retirement from the Census Bureau,
he and Hilda moved to Colorado to be near their children and grandchildren. Sam and Hilda
settled down in Longmont, Colorado where he became a member of the Longmont Shabbat
group as well as a local senior tennis club and a group of friends who gathered for a friendly
game of poker each week. Sam is survived by his two brothers , Nathan and Joe as well as his
three children, Mike, Carol and Rob and his four grandchildren Joey, Rachel, Jackie and Eric.

Sam was loved by all he came in contact with. His physical presence will be sorely missed but
his spirit and compassion will live on in our memories. In lieu of gifts and flowers, the family has
asked that donations be made to the Longmont Humane Society.
