Sheila (Riley) Ward, 91, of Boulder, Colorado, peacefully entered the embrace of her Heavenly Father on August 23, 2024. Known for her sharp wit and vibrant spirit, Sheila led an adventurous life. Whether it was playing a game of charades, hosting her legendary 4th of July parties, or reading "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to her family or students, Sheila's enthusiasm was infectious.
Born on April 6, 1933, in Wallasey, England, to Rose and John Ward, Sheila was the eldest of four daughters. She attended St. Dominic's Grammar School for Girls in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where she excelled. Her zest for learning led her to Queens University, where she graduated with honors, followed by a post-graduate degree from University College Dublin. Sheila initially taught elementary school in Ireland, but soon decided to "see the world" and moved to New York City. There, she was selected as a Flight Attendant for Pan American Airways, where she combined her cultural curiosity and linguistic skills with her love of travel.
Sheila eventually returned to her true calling, teaching. She taught at the United Nations, where she often stayed late to help foreign students learn English. Later, she taught for the Department of Defense at Landstuhl American School in Germany, and finally, in the Boulder Valley School District near her sister's family. Sheila taught at several elementary schools in Boulder and received Honorable Mention for Colorado Teacher of the Year in 1979.
Beyond teaching, Sheila was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, often writing "Pet of the Week" articles for the Boulder Camera. She had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. Sheila's remarkable vocabulary and memory were matched by her love of foreign language films, reading, and Jazz.
A devout Catholic, Sheila's faith and devotion to Our Mother Mary were a guiding force throughout her life. For many years she enthusiastically served as a lector at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Boulder.
During her long and varied life, Sheila's most significant achievement was the profound impact she had on her students, many of whom remained in touch with her over the years.
Sheila was predeceased by her parents Rose and John Ward; her sister and brothers-in-law, Pat and Louis Power, Frank Wagner; and her former husband and friend, Jim Riley. Sheila is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Moira and Joe Russoniello and Doreen Wagner; as well as her nieces and nephews, Dr. David (Dianna) Power, Carol (Joe) Gilhawley, Shivaun (Craig) Korfanta, Sean (Christine) Wagner, Gerard (Jenny) Power, and Kerry Wagner.
A service to celebrate Sheila's life will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder on September 3, 2023. The Rosary will begin at 9:30am, followed by a Mass at 10:00am with a reception to follow.
