Stanley Goldberg

May 28, 1928 — August 2, 2024

Stanley Mason Goldberg passed away peacefully at 8:30 am on Friday, August 2, at home, age 96.

Born in Swampscott, MA on 28 May 1928 to Meyer and Frances Goldberg. The great depression took the family to Wash. D.C. where he was raised. Finishing his education with a bachelor's degree in architecture from The Catholic University of America in 1952, he immediately married the girl of his dreams. After 3 ½ years in the Navy during which he served on board APA 204 and LST 1167 as 1st Lt. and gunnery officer, the lure of the mountains took them in 1956 to Colorado where he had his own shop practicing architecture until 1998. Stanley's earthly years, as attested to in his autobiography, A Life Well Lived, were of a pursuit to the fullest of his many passions, including grand opera, the arts, affairs of the world, skiing, running and especially mountaineering. At the age of 81 he ran his last of 33 road races, his 16th Bolder Boulder. Mountaineering took him from Colorado 14ers to Denali at 62, Everest in Nepal and Tibet at 64 and 69, K-2 in Pakistan at 67, Kilimanjaro at 75, Mexican volcanoes, Inca trail in Peru, Bhutan, Antarctica, Australia, Andes, Amazon and Galapagos with trekking and travel to over 50 countries throughout the world. He was a founding member of the Boulder Lhasa Sister City Project. On the home front he climbed, unsuccessfully at 82, the last 2 remaining high points of the 50 US states. At 85 he climbed halfway up the Matterhorn, achieving his goal to have climbed a mountain on all 7 continents.

Stanley leaves 3 sons, all mountaineers, and their wives, Alex and Karen of Denver, CO; Serge and Lisa of Boulder, CO; Stefan and Dawne of Atlanta, GA, 7 wonderful grandchildren and one great grandchild. His wife and soul mate of 55 years, Anni Andries Goldberg, preceded him in death in 2007. Vicky Youcha entered his life in 2011 and they have been blessed with, as husband and wife, many happy trails together. Funeral services will be at 10 am Monday August 5th, at Congregation Har Ha Shem, at which Stanley was a founding member.
