Susan Anne Winchester 80, passed away February 21, 2025 in Westminster, Colorado. Susan was born on Warren Air Force Base near Cheyenne, Wyoming September 19, 1944. The eldest child of Norman and Elinor Winchester she was raised in Boulder, Colorado, Susan completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in1966 from the University of Colorado. She was awarded a Masters in German and Slavic Language and Literature, then completed her PhD in Slavic Languages in 1972, also through CU.
After graduation, Susan spent 2 years teaching English in Wroclaw, Poland. Returning home, Susan continued her education, earning a degree in Accounting. She became a CPA, and worked for McGladrey and H&R Block, then as an independent CPA. While at H&R Block she combined her language and CPA skills writing one of their training books on International taxes.
Susan had a passion for genealogy. With a curious mind, she was persistent in discovering ancestors on both sides of the family. Beyond searching obituaries, census rolls, birth, death and marriage certificates she had a knack for tracking down wayward relatives, sometimes uncovering bits of life stories people probably didn't intend to be discovered. She co-authored a book with Carol Cook Darrow, a The Genealogist's Guide to Researching Tax Records (synopsis: "The census taker came every ten years and often missed people. The tax collector came every year and seldom missed anyone"). Susan was, naturally, the family historian, and her passing will result in a loss of family knowledge about itself.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents Norman and Elinor Winchester, and her brother-in-law Bill Farber. She is survived by her siblings Carol Short (Larry), Janet Winchester-Silbaugh (Barry), Lisa Farber, Mary Marugg (Winston), John Winchester (Janet) and nieces and nephews Stephanie Bjorkman, Billy Farber, Jason Short, Jonathan Short, Dan Silbaugh, Larson Silbaugh, Kaitlyn Silbaugh, Keith Winchester, Lauren Winchester and Brad Winchester.
