Susan Kay Wright, née Bartholomew, died peacefully in her sleep at home on February 3, 2022. She was born September 30, 1946, in Boulder, Colorado to Charles Graydon “Bart” and Kathleen Wilma (Drumm) Bartholomew. Sue was the second of three children.
Sue was proud to be a native of Boulder and of her family’s deep contribution to the city she called home for 76 years. The Drumm family were some of the first settlers in the area, coming to Colorado by covered wagon in 1868. They first settled in Valmont before moving to Boulder in 1874. Henry Drumm, Sue’s grandfather, attended the University of Colorado from which he graduated in the first class in 1882. Because the graduates were listed alphabetically, he had the distinction of being the first graduate of the University. Henry Drumm also wrote the first University of Colorado song, “Boulder Town”. He was a mapmaker making maps of the city, county, and mining properties that are still in general use today. Sue’s great uncle, Jack Bartholomew was a founding member of the Boulder Medical Center in 1949. The Drumm and Bartholomew families have long and storied histories in the Boulder County area; Sue, an avid genealogist, uncovered a great deal of Boulder history relative to her family.
Sue graduated from Boulder High School in 1963. Following graduation, she worked at IBM. On June 3, 1966 she married Everett Carl Scott. They had one child, Jeffrey Carl Scott, born on September 30, 1970. They eventually settled back in Boulder and later divorced. On May 27, 1972 she married Alan Douglas Wright. From this union Matthew Douglas Wright was born on August 11, 1973. Sue and Al were married for 49 years.
Sue and her dad, Bart, owned and operated Bart’s Beef in Marshall for years. Sue was involved with all aspects of the business from cutting the sides of beef to bookkeeping. Her children, niece and nephew all have fond memories of joining her at the shop and being fed beef jerky, stale donuts and frozen hot dogs. Bart’s Beef was a place to socialize and leave with a package of the best meat around.
Sue was a beloved employee of Boulder County for many years and was employed there at the time of her passing. She loved her job in the mail room and had no intention of ever retiring.
Sue was a master knitter and seamstress, avid bowler, and had a lifelong devotion to cats, often adopting and taming feral ones that frequented her back yard, eventually making them beloved house cats.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alan Wright; brother, Tony Bartholomew; and sister, Jane (Bartholomew) Baggett.
Sue is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Scott, of Louisville, CO, and Matthew Douglas Wright, of Longmont, CO; her sister-in-law Patricia Young as well as her niece Kelly (Gerald) Graybill, nephew Brett Bartholomew, and her great nephew George Graybill.
Internment is at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder Co.
Those that wish to honor her memory may make a contribution to the Boulder County Humane Society, American Cancer Society, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the National MS Society
