William (Bill) Joseph Mattingly of Boulder Colorado passed away peacefully on May 19, 2013. He was 90. Bill was born in Hardinsburg Kentucky to William Lee and Rose Beatrice Mattingly. Bill was the oldest of 13 children. His youth was spent on a small family farm in Kentucky. He moved to St. Louis Missouri in 1940. During World War II, Bill worked performing quality control testing on submarine engines. Then he served in the Army. After the Army, he returned to St. Louis where he met Mary Ruth Jolly. He and Mary were married in 1948 and had four children. Mary passed away in 1986. Bill married Pat Doerfler in 1990. Pat passed away in 2009. Bill was beloved father of Lindsey Mattingly (Pat Troy), Michael Mattingly (Melinda), Marsha Mattingly and Lisa Mattingly and beloved grandfather to grandchildren Ryan, Walker, Aaron, Julia Mattingly and one the late Georgia, and great grandfather to Lucinda Mattingly.
Bill worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance for 25 years, rising through the ranks from sales agent to district manager. While on vacation, he and Mary fell in love with Colorado so when the company offered him an opportunity for a position in Colorado, he moved the family first to Denver, then to Boulder. In Boulder, Bill was involved in Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus. After his retirement, Bill was very involved in volunteer work for his church and delivering Meals on Wheels.
Bill made friends with everyone he met. His warmth and humor were evident even in his final hours. He had an immense enjoyment of life experiences, from riding the buckboard to church as a boy to Skyping with his grandchildren at age 90.
Bill was a long time member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and his faith was at the center of his life.
A funeral mass will be held for Bill at Sacred Heart of Mary in Boulder on Friday, May 24 at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow.
