William McCartney

William Paul "Bill" McCartney, the esteemed former head coach of the University of Colorado football team and founder of the Promise Keepers men's ministry, passed away on January 10, 2025, at his home in Boulder, Colorado, after a courageous battle with dementia. He was 84 years old.

Born on August 22, 1940, in Riverview, Michigan, McCartney demonstrated athletic prowess from an early age, earning 11 letters in football, basketball, and baseball during his high school years. He pursued higher education at the University of Missouri, where he played football and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in education in 1962.

McCartney began his coaching career in Michigan high schools, achieving state championships in both football and basketball at Divine Child High School in Dearborn. In 1974, he joined the University of Michigan's coaching staff under Bo Schembechler, eventually serving as defensive coordinator.

In 1982, McCartney took the helm as head coach at the University of Colorado. Over 13 seasons, he transformed the Buffaloes into a formidable force, culminating in a national championship in 1990. His tenure included three consecutive Big Eight Conference titles from 1989 to 1991, and he was honored with multiple Coach of the Year awards in 1989. McCartney retired from coaching in 1994 to devote more time to his family.

Beyond the football field, McCartney founded Promise Keepers in 1990, a Christian men's ministry aimed at promoting spiritual growth and accountability among men. The organization gained national prominence, reflecting McCartney's deep commitment to faith and community.

McCartney was married to Lynne "Lyndi" Taussig for over 50 years until her passing in 2013. He is survived by their four children-Michael (Jennifer), Thomas (Pamela), Kristyn, and Marc (Robin) -and ten beloved grandchildren: TC, Derek (Carly), Nickolas, Justin (Marsha), Macy, Matthew, Grace, Brandon, Mallory, and Alexa. He also leaves behind three cherished great-grandchildren: Zelie, Ezekiel, and Azara.

In recognition of his contributions to college football, McCartney was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. His legacy endures through the countless lives he touched as a coach, mentor, and leader.

A public Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, January 22 at 10:00 at the CU Events Center. Charitable contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
